Back-rank mages can still cast spells if they were just killed by spells. So you don't actually have to level your Archmages up so they have the spell resistance to beat Lagoth Zanta. Just have one cast ZZGO each round to revive everyone and blast the enemy. You'll move last here, and that helps you.
